Minho is the perfect destination for a getaway in Portugal. Green landscapes, unbeatable gastronomy, unique wines and a hospitality found only in the North. And the best part? Everything is accessible from a single base: Guardizela, between Guimarães, Braga and Porto.
We have prepared a 3 to 5-day itinerary to make the most of your stay in the region.
| Day | Destination |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Guimarães |
| Day 2 | Braga |
| Day 3 | Porto |
| Day 4 | Gerês and waterfalls |
| Day 5 | Rest at Casa do Xico |
Day 1 — Guimarães, where Portugal was born
Start with Guimarães Castle and the Palace of the Dukes. Have lunch in the historic centre — we recommend traditional rojões à minhota. In the afternoon, take the cable car up to Penha for panoramic views and hiking trails among the rocks.

Distance from Casa do Xico: 15 minutes
Day 2 — Braga, the city of archbishops
Braga Cathedral, the oldest in Portugal, deserves a long visit. Climb Bom Jesus do Monte — the 600 baroque steps are a unique experience (or take the oldest funicular on the Iberian Peninsula). End your day at Jardim de Santa Bárbara.
For dinner, try the Braga-style francesinha — yes, Braga has its own version and it is delicious.

Distance from Casa do Xico: 15 minutes
Day 3 — Porto, the Invincible City
Porto needs no introduction. Ribeira, Lello Bookshop, Port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, Clérigos Tower. A full day is not enough, but it is enough to fall in love.

Distance from Casa do Xico: 30 minutes (no parking stress in the city centre — return to the tranquillity of Guardizela at the end of the day)
Day 4 — Gerês and waterfalls
Peneda-Gerês National Park is the only national park in Portugal. One hour from Casa do Xico, you can visit:
- Tahiti Waterfall — natural pool hidden among granite rocks
- Arado Waterfall — more accessible, with nearby parking
- Caniçada Reservoir — kayaking, stand-up paddle and river beaches
- Albergaria Forest — ancient woodland with centuries-old oaks

Day 5 — Rest day at Casa do Xico
After so many adventures, dedicate a day to Casa do Xico:
- Quiet morning with breakfast in the garden
- Swim in the saltwater pool with mountain views
- Stroll through the vineyards of the 18th-century estate
- Pick vegetables and herbs from the organic garden
- Home-cooked dinner with local produce in the fully equipped kitchen

Why choose Casa do Xico as your base?
Guardizela’s location is strategic: at the centre of everything but away from the noise. Instead of changing hotels every day, stay in a complete house for up to 6 guests and explore the region at your own pace.
- 15 min from Guimarães and Braga
- 30 min from Porto and airport
- 1h from Gerês
- Private pool
- Historic wine estate
- Sustainability and local produce
