River beaches on the Ave, near Guimarães

The Ave river runs through the Guimarães area, and this is where you’ll find the closest river beaches for anyone staying nearby.

Taipas River Beach (Praia Fluvial das Taipas)

In Caldas das Taipas, beside the Roman bridge over the Ave, this is the best-known river beach in Guimarães. It sits within Parque das Taipas, with lawns and shaded areas, riverside trails, a playground and tennis courts, perfect for a family day out.

About 20 minutes from Casa do Xico.

Praia Seca and Praia da Lameira

Also in Caldas das Taipas, the Praia Seca leisure park is one of the most pleasant riverside spots in the area. Nearby, where the Agrela stream meets the Ave, lies Praia da Lameira, with plenty of shade and good facilities for an easy afternoon.

Praia da Rôla

In Castelões, this small river beach is quieter and has a little bar. A calm choice if you’d rather skip the busier spots and simply dip your feet in peace.

River beaches on the Cávado, near Braga

Heading north, the Cávado river offers some of the most awarded river beaches in the Minho, many with a Blue Flag and excellent water quality. They’re about 35 minutes from Casa do Xico.

Adaúfe River Beach

One of the most popular in the region, and rightly so. In Adaúfe (Braga), it has calm, crystal-clear water, ideal for families with children, with a Blue Flag, its own car park and a riverside picnic area.

Cavadinho River Beach

In the parish of Crespos, it’s known for its shaded corners and excellent water quality, recognised over the years with a Gold Quality seal. A safe bet on the hottest days.

Ponte do Bico River Beach

In Palmeira, on the banks of the Cávado, this is one of the busiest river beaches in the Braga area, lively in summer and well equipped.

A little further, but worth every minute: Gerês

For something different, the Peneda-Gerês National Park is about an hour away, with breathtaking river beaches and reservoirs such as the Caniçada Reservoir, where you can also try kayaking and stand-up paddle. We include Gerês in our 3-to-5-day Minho itinerary, well worth a look.

Tips for a river beach day in the Minho

  • Arrive early. In July and August the best-known beaches fill up by early afternoon, especially at weekends.
  • Choose supervised beaches. Look for those with a Blue Flag or a lifeguard, particularly with children.
  • Pack the essentials. Water shoes for the pebbles, a hat, water and a picnic. Many have picnic areas, but not all have a bar.
  • Respect the river. Currents and depth vary, always enter with care and take your litter home.
  • Mix in some culture. A morning in the historic centre of Guimarães or Braga, an afternoon swim in the river. The best of both worlds.
